Big Brown runs Huge to win Kentucky Derby

(Monday, May 5) Trainer Richard Dutrow told everyone who would listen that his colt Big Brown was not going to be beaten in the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Turns out, he knew what he was talking about.

The undefeated three year old won his fourth career start, dominating his 19 foes by winning by 4 ¾ lengths.

The celebration soon turned somber, as the filly Eight Belles, who crossed the wire second, broke down on the gallop out, fracturing both front ankles.

Her injuries proved fatal, as she was euthanized on the track.

Larry Jones, who on the previous day won the Kentucky Oaks (G1) with her stable mate Proud Spell, trained the filly.

Jones said, "She went out in a blaze of glory, she went out a champion. We're heartbroke. We're going to miss her."

It was yet another high profile breakdown in a major race. Just two years ago, Barbaro was injured soon after the start in the Preakness Stakes, and lost his battle eight months later.

In a strange twist of fate, the Michael Matz trained Chelokee was injured in the Alysheba Stakes on Friday at Churchill Downs. Originally thought to be a fracture similar to the one suffered by Barbaro, it was later discovered to be a severe dislocation.

The colt will undergo surgery this week at the Root and Riddle clinic in Lexington.

Big Brown put in a huge performance in his Derby victory, overcoming a lack of experience and the 20 post to win the Run for the Roses.

The colt paid $6.80 for the win. The exacta with Eight Belles returned $141.60. Denis of Cork landed third, the $2 trifecta paying $3,445.60.

The winner became the first horse to win the Derby out of the 20 post since Clyde Van Dusen, who broke from the 20 back in the days before the starting gate was used.

The win gave Kent Desormeaux his third Derby win. The Louisiana native won the Derby in 1998 aboard Real Quiet and 2000 on Fusaichi Pegasus.

The colt picked up a check for $1,451,800 and increased his bankroll to $2,114,500 in just four career starts.

Dutrow reported on Sunday that his colt came out of the race in good shape and would be pointed toward the Preakness Stakes (G1), the second jewel of the Triple Crown. The Preakness will be run on May 17 at PImlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

Big Brown may not see to many familiar faces in the starting gate at Pimlico. Early indications are none of the horses that ran behind Big Brown in the Derby will come back in two weeks for the Preakness.

There will be some new shooters looking to pull off the upset. Among the possibilities for the Preakness include Behindatthebar, El Gato Malo, Kentucky Bear, Tres Borrachos, Giant Moon, Stevil, Yankee Victor, and Harlem Rocker.
