Kentucky Derby odds and horse matchups

It looks like it's Big Brown's race to lose at Churchill Downs on Saturday, but he's by no means a lock to win the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Big Brown was the favorite when the 20-horse field was announced earlier this week, and he remained a 3/1 fave as of late Friday night. Big Brown boasts an impressive record so far this season at 3-0, which included winning the Florida Derby.
You can also wager on him to defeat various horses in the Derby field in unique horse matchup bets available at 's online racebook. See the recent story detailing these fun Derby bets.
One knock against Big Brown could be his unlucky post drawing, as he will start on the outside in the No. 20 post. Only one horse has ever won the Derby out of the 20 in 15 attempts, and that happened way back in 1929 when Clyde Van Dusen turned the trick.
If Big Brown fails to maintain his perfect racing record the winner's circle could be reserved for Colonel John or Pyro, who are considered to be his top challengers. Colonel John was a 4/1 underdog late Friday, but he's a proven winner having won the Santa Anita Derby earlier this season.
Pyro, a 6/1 underdog, also has a couple wins to his name this season, but he finished tenth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, leaving experts and bettors wondering if he has what it takes to win the Derby.
In a rare occurrence a filly is among the Derby field this year, as Eight Belles becomes the first filly to run in the event since 1999. That year two fillies took part in the race, with Excellent Meeting finishing fifth and Three Ring coming in 19th.
Only three fillies have ever won the Derby, and the last to do so was Winning Colors in 1988. Eight Belles is 4-0 in her races this season, but she's still a 15/1 underdog in the Derby. She is a legitimate threat to win here and would not come as a huge surprise after filly Rags to Riches showed her stamina and class in winning last year's Belmont Stakes.
Any novice horse bettors who only wager on the three Triple Crown races may want to try a trifecta bet to try and maximize their profits if they get lucky. For the uninformed, a trifecta is a bet in which you wager on who you think will finish first, second, and third.
It can be a difficult bet to win, but when you hit all three horses dead-on it always pays out well.
