Aces high for baseball total bettors

advertisement
Cole Hamels

Sunday's MLB schedule is loaded with aces once again, as names like Edinson Volquez,  Johan Santana, Joe Saunders, Tim Lincecum, Scott Kazmir, and Cole Hamels all stand out in the pitching matchups.

What does that mean for bettors who focus on baseball totals (also kown as over-under betting)? It means studying the recent trends to see how low some of these pitchers will go.

The Reds' Volquez (14-5, 2.86) still has one of the best ERAs in all of baseball, and he is coming off a solid outing against Pittsburgh in which he allowed only one run in 6 2-3 innings to earn the win. On Sunday he'll take on the Cardinals' Kyle Lohse (13-5, 3.92), watch the odds at .

Santana (10-7, 2.89) extended his unbeaten streak to eight games last time out after giving up three runs in seven innings in a win versus Washington. Santana takes on Pittsburgh on Sunday, who he limited to two runs in 5 2-3 innings in a start earlier this season. Jeff Karstens (2-1, 1.23) is on tap to start for the Pirates.

Saunders (14-5, 3.07) came away with a no-decision in his last start after allowing three runs in seven innings against the Yankees. The Angels lefty will get Cleveland on Sunday, who he limited to one run in eight innings back in April. Cleveland will hope for a rare solid outing from Jeremy Sowers (1-6, 5.70).

Lincecum is expected to start Sunday despite taking a line drive off his right knee in his last start. Lincecum had pitched 4 1-3 innings and allowed one run while striking out seven before the liner knocked him out of the game. On Sunday Lincecum faces the Braves, who he held to two runs in eight innings in a win earlier this month. The Braves have yet to name a starter for Sunday's game.

Kazmir (8-6, 3.22) only allowed two runs in five innings against Oakland in his last start, but he was still tagged with the loss. Kazmir faces Texas on Sunday, and he's pitched very well against the Rangers this season with a 2-0 record and a 1.30 ERA in two starts against them. The Rangers will send Vicente Padilla (12-6, 4.85) to the mound on Sunday.

Phillies southpaw Cole Hamels hasn't recorded a win since July 3 thanks to a few poor starts, a lack of run support, and bullpen that couldn't hold the lead. Last week against the Dodgers Hamels allowed two runs in seven strong innings, but had to settle for a no-decision after the Philadelphia bullpen gave up runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Hamels faces San Diego on Sunday, and he picked up a win against them earlier this season after allowing two runs in 7 1-3 innings. Cha Seung Baek will start for San Diego (4-6, 5.12). After Jamie Moyer threw a three-hit gem Friday, watch for Hamels to copy the old lefty master and stifle the Padres as well. With the Phils struggling at the plate, Sunday's match shapes up as an UNDER call.
