Maddux aims for Win 350 vs. favored Phillies

advertisement

History could be made on Tuesday night when San Diego travels to Philadelphia, while in other action Seattle looks for a win in Cleveland and division rivals square off when Milwaukee drops in on the Cubs.

Greg Maddux makes his third attempt at career win 350 on Tuesday night versus the Phillies. Maddux should have got the big milestone victory in his last start when he pitched seven shutout innings versus the Giants.

However, once Maddux was out of the game the bullpen surrendered the lead and he had to settle for a no-decision. Last season in his lone start against the Phillies, Maddux earned a win after allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings.

Cole Hamels will oppose Maddux for Philadelphia and the southpaw has lost his last two starts to sit at 2-3 with a 2.75 ERA. Hamels went seven innings against Milwaukee in his last start and gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out 11. Hamels' Achilles heel in that start was two home runs he allowed which accounted for four runs.

Seattle has gotten their money's worth out of Carlos Silva so far this season after he started the season 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA. Silva picked up a no-decision in his last start after allowing two runs on six hits in six innings versus the Orioles. While pitching for Minnesota last season, Silva faced Cleveland four times and went 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA.

Fausto Carmona improved to 3-1 for Cleveland this season after defeating Kansas City in his last start. Carmona went five innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. In his only start against the Mariners last season, Carmona earned a win after allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings.

Milwaukee is hoping Ben Sheets will return to the mound on Tuesday after missing his last start with a sore arm. Sheets was dominant in his first four starts of the season going 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA. On opening day versus the Cubs, Sheets received a no-decision after limiting Chicago to no runs on two hits in six 1-3 innings.

Marquis heads to the mound on Tuesday with a 1-0 record and a 3.47 ERA in four starts for Chicago this season. Marquis looked good in his last start when he held Colorado to two runs on eight hits in seven innings.

This will be Marquis' first start of the season against Milwaukee but he did face the Brewers twice last season, going 1-0 with a 1.49 ERA.
