A pair of divisional matchups highlight the MLB schedule on Wednesday, as Cincinnati takes on St. Louis and Oakland faces the Angels. Also on tap is an intriguing contest with the Dodgers visiting Florida.
The pitching matchup on Wednesday between the Dodgers' Chad Billingsley and the Marlins' Scott Olsen looks one-sided on paper. Billingsley enters this game 0-4 with a 6.53 ERA, while Olsen is 3-0 on the season with a 2.06 ERA.
Billingsley has taken the loss in his last four starts, and faced Arizona last time out when he struck out 12 but surrendered five runs in six innings. He's 2-0 lifetime against the Marlins.
Olsen should be 4-0 on the season, but had to settle for a no-decision in his last start despite holding Milwaukee scoreless over 7 1-3 innings. The Marlins opened as -110 moneyline chalk at with the total set at 8.5.
When Cincinnati and St. Louis square off in a division tilt, Aaron Harang will get the ball for the Reds and Braden Looper will be on the hill for the Cardinals. Harang has been a hard-luck loser a few times already this season and owns a 1-3 record despite a low 2.76 ERA.
In his last start versus San Francisco, Harang went seven 1-3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in a losing effort. Looper enters this game at 3-1 with a 4.05 ERA. He picked up a no-decision in his last start after throwing seven shutout innings against Houston.
Looper owned the Reds in two starts against them last year in which he was 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA.
In Wednesday's other divisional matchup, Dana Eveland gets the call for Oakland while the Angels send Ervin Santana to the hill. Eveland sports a 3-1 record with a respectable 2.48 ERA on the season. He's coming off a win over Seattle in which he allowed three runs on six hits in five 1-3 innings.
Santana is a perfect 4-0 with a 2.97 ERA so far for Los Angeles and oddsmakers at set him as -150 favorite to get another victory today. Even though Santana had a rough time last season, he had no trouble with the A's as he was 1-0 with 0.00 ERA in two appearances versus Oakland.
Looking ahead to Thursday's schedule, there is at least one superb pitching matchup on tap in the finale of the Milwaukee/Cubs series. The scheduled starters in that one are Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano and Brewers young gun Yovani Gallardo.
In his last start Gallardo pitched seven shutout innings versus Florida, while Zambrano also threw seven shutout innings in his last outing against Washington.
