No. 1 takes on No. 2 in a matchup of the best seeds in the South Region on Sunday, while in the Midwest Region upstart No. 10 Davidson gets their toughest test of the tournament so far when they clash with No. 1 Kansas.
South Region
Texas (2) vs. Memphis (1)
The Longhorns breezed through the Sweet 16 with an 82-62 win over Stanford as a 2-point favorite. D.J. Augustin delivered with 23 points, five rebounds, and seven assists in the win. Augustin, the Longhorns’ leading scorer, had only scored a combined 18 points in Texas’ first two tournament games.
The Tigers mauled Michigan State 92-74 as a 5.5-point favorite in the Sweet 16. Derrick Rose unleashed 27 points on the Spartans, while Chris Douglas-Roberts also had a strong game with 25 points.
Midwest Region
Davidson (10) vs. Kansas (1)
The Wildcats continued their amazing tournament run with a 73-56 upset of No. 3 seed Wisconsin as a 5.5-point underdog in the Sweet 16. Stephen Curry was the sparkplug for Davidson again as he netted a game-high 33 points, of which 22 came in the second half as the Wildcats pulled away. Andrew Lovedale had 12 points for the Wildcats, and Jason Richards dropped in 11 points. Davidson shot 49 percent in the upset, while their defense was strong, holding the Badgers to only 37 percent from the floor.
The Jayhawks made short work of No. 12 seed Villanova 72-57 as a 12.5-point favorite. Brandon Rush led the Jayhawks’ offensive attack with 16 points, while Russell Robinson scored 15 points. Kansas shot 52 percent from the floor in the win and easily knocked off Villanova despite getting only 11 points combined from Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson.
