Jayhawks underdogs in national hoops final

advertisement

March Madness comes to a close, in April, on Monday night when the Kansas Jayhawks take on the Memphis Tigers for the national championship.

The Jayhawks earned their berth in the championship with a surprising 84-66 rout of North Carolina in the semifinals. It was surprising because Kansas was actually a 3-point underdog in that game.

Kansas is now 4-1 ATS in the tournament, with their lone ATS loss coming against Davidson in the Elite 8. Brandon Rush was a force for the Jayhawks against North Carolina with a game-high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Darrell Jackson added 12 points, as Kansas shot 53 percent from the field in the win. The Jayhawks’ defense shut down the high-flying Tar Heels offense, limiting them to a lackluster 35 percent shooting.

Memphis continued to prove the doubters wrong in the semifinals with a 78-63 whipping of UCLA. The Tigers were a 2-point favorite in the game and improved to 3-2 ATS in the tournament.

Chris Douglas-Roberts poured in a game-high 28 points against the Bruins, but it was Derrick Rose everyone was talking about after the win. Rose, the Tigers’ freshman guard, scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Joey Dorsey also had a strong game on the boards with 15 rebounds, as the Tigers out-rebounded the Bruins 42-35. The Tigers also played stellar defense, limiting Kevin Love to only 12 points and holding the Bruins to 37 percent shooting.

The Tigers have earned the respect of the oddsmakers after being set as a 3-point favorite in the title game at .

Memphis fans should feel good about the odds falling in their favor as the favorite has won the game and covered the spread in the Madness final the last four years.

The last underdog to claim a national championship was Syracuse, who topped Kansas 81-78 as a 5.5-point underdog.
