New Year’s Day Bowl-a-rama

advertisement

The BCS bowl season finally begins on New Year’s Day with the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl both on tap. For anyone that can’t get enough college football there’s also the Gator Bowl to wager on.

This Rose Bowl features USC from the Pac-10 and Illinois from the Big Ten. USC, the reigning Rose Bowl champs, won their final four games of the season to win the Pac-10 title once again. Quarterback John David Booty leads an inconsistent Trojan offense that may need to lean on their high-powered defense, which ranked fifth in the nation after allowing only 15.9 points per game this season.

The Illini also won their last four games, which included a spectacular upset over Ohio State. Illinois’ hopes likely fall on QB Juice Williams, who was a force against the Buckeyes with four touchdowns. In the bowl game USC is a 14-point favorite at BodogLife .

In the Sugar Bowl undefeated Hawaii takes on Georgia. The Warriors went 12-0 to easily win the WAC behind their top-ranked offense that averaged 46.2 points per game this season. Quarterback Colt Brennan passed for an astounding 4174 yards with 38 touchdowns and 14 interceptions during the season.

The Bulldogs won their last six games of the year to go 10-2. Georgia’s top offensive weapon was a surprise, as little was expected from freshman running back Knowshon Moreno, who led the team with 1273 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. The Bulldogs are an 8-point favorite over at BodogLife .

In the Gator Bowl Texas Tech goes up against Virginia. The Red Raiders’ offense put up huge numbers during the season behind quarterback Graham Harrell. Harrell led all quarterbacks with 5298 passing yards, 45 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Harrell’s favorite target was Michael Crabtree, who was the top receiver in the nation with 1861 yards and 21 touchdowns.

The Cavaliers were a surprising 9-3 in 2007 after sporting the No. 3 defense in the ACC, allowing 18.8 points per game. Virginia’s offense may have some trouble keeping up with the high-scoring Red Raiders, as they averaged only 24.1 points per game this season. The Red Raiders are favored by 6-points over at BodogLife .
