Samsung 500 Preview

advertisement

Jeff Burton drives into Texas Motor Speedway with the Sprint Cup points lead, but will he still be on top of the standings after Sunday’s Samsung 500?

After placing third in last week’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500 Burton jumped to the top of the standings, and he currently has a 39-point lead on second-place Kevin Harvick. Burton will be looking to add to his lead on Sunday, and Texas might be just the place to do it as he won the Samsung 500 last season. Even with his recent success and his two career victories at Texas Burton is a big underdog to win on Sunday over at at 20/1.

The favorite, according to the oddsmakers, is Carl Edwards at 5/1. Edwards has two wins already this season, and they both came on tracks that are very similar to the layout of Texas – California and Las Vegas. Edwards has won before at Texas (the Dickies 500 back in 2005) and if he can find the speed he had earlier this season he could be tough to beat this weekend.

Trailing Edwards on the odds list are Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth, both at 7/1. Busch, who has one win this season, had been one of the more consistent drivers before finishing well back in 38th at Martinsville last week. Kenseth is still searching for his first victory of the season and he’ll be trying to build on the pair of second-place finishes he posted at Texas last year. Kenseth does have a win at Texas on his resume, which he recorded back in 2002.

The regular leaders on the odds list are jammed together. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, and Jeff Gordon are all listed at 8/1, while Jimmie Johnson is down at 10/1. If one of them finally decides to claim the checkered flag this week they’ll pay much better than usual. Also getting high odds this week is Denny Hamlin at 15/1; he’s coming off his first win of the year at Martinsville last week.
