The Cardinals and Bears are both coming off disappointing seasons in different ways. The Cards were aching to get back to the Super Bowl as they realized it would likely be their last chance to redeem themselves after a near miss in 2008 with Kurt Warner retiring. The Bears came into 2009 expecting to be one of the league’s better team, but they lost their defensive leader in the first game of the season and Jay Cutler played poorly the whole year.
This year’s trendy pick is the Houston Texans, who on the arm of Matt Schaub and the legs and hands of Andre Johnson have an exciting pass attack. While the NFL is a passing league, that is about all they have aside from a couple studs on defense in Mario Williams and Brian Cushing. Cushing will miss the first four games of the season for a drug suspension, however, leaving the Texan D even more shorthanded.
The Titans finished strong last season under improved defensive play and the quarterbacking of Vince Young. They come into 2010 with playoff aspirations and even thoughts of getting past the Colts in for the AFC South crown. The Panthers are the youngest team in the NFL this season as they have committed to a complete youth movement. The Titans (-2.5) are favored in this matchup against the Panthers (+2.5).
With Brett Favre back in the saddle, the Vikings are a team that many consider the favorite to win the Super Bowl. He will likely see more than the one series he saw in his first game back this time around so this is one to watch. The Seahawks are an underrated opponent, however and the spread reflects this. The Vikings (-5.5) are heavily favored for a preseason game over the Seahawks (+5.5) in this one.&n
The Ravens were an unlucky team last year for sure, and are arguably the best team in the AFC coming into 2010. The Giants, on the other hand, faced all kinds of turmoil and injuries on the defensive side of the ball and absolutely imploded. Both teams look to improve upon their 2009 finishes and the Ravens have Super Bowl aspirations.
The Jaguars have come into 2010 seemingly stuck in mediocrity. They just barely missed the playoffs last season after a surprising 7-5 start, after which they proceeded to lose the last four games – including an awful loss to the lowly Browns in Week 16 which officially killed their playoff hopes. The Buccaneers are still a bad team that hopes to have finally hit rock bottom. The Jaguars (-2.5) are favored versus the Buccaneers (+
After an unexpected playoff appearance behind a very good defense, the Cincinnati Bengals hope to take the next step forward. They are no longer a pass first offense as Carson Palmer’s arm and knee ailments have taken him out of the category of upper echelon quarterback, so their success will largely depend on Cedric Benson’s ability to continue the success he finally found in 2009.
Both teams entered the 2010 preseason hoping they have hit rock bottom. Both teams have recently installed new regimes hoping to bring change to a losing culture. The Lions seem to be further along in their transition, with players starting at skill positions in 2010 that they expect to be part of their long term plans – Matt Stafford, Jahvid Best, and Calvin Johnson, for instance. The Lions (-1.5) are the favorite in this one ov
Miami comes into 2010 with high expectations after picking up Brandon Marshall this past offseason. The last two seasons have been the most successful the Dolphins have had since the late 90s, and they hope to take another step forward this year. The Falcons expect to at least make the playoffs. Matt Ryan enters 2010 expecting to bounce back after a tough second season. Vegas has labeled this
The Hurricanes had a bit of a disappointing end to 2009 as they finished with a loss to Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl. There were some positives, though. The development of quarterback Jacory Harris, who is going into his junior year, gives their offense some serious promise. Vegas had them nailed down last year, as they went 6-5 against the spread.
