Two of the best teams in the AFC will meet in Gillette Stadium this week when the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3 SU, 5-6 ATS) travel to the northeast to take on the New England Patriots (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS). Pittsburgh is coming off of a dominating 27-10 sports betting win against the Bengals last Thursday night at Heinz Field. Meanwhile, Matt Cassel has filled in nicely for all-world QB Tom Brady and last week led the Patriots to a crucial 48-28 win over the Dolphins that handily covered the NFL gambling line.
QB Ben Roethlisberger finally seems to have broken out of his slump with his performance last week against division rival Cincinnati. Against the Bengals, Roethlisberger completed 17 of 30 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown and also added a late rushing touchdown to seal the deal for Steelers bettors. On the year though, Roethlisberger has only put up average numbers, completing 61.6% of his passes for 2233 yards with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Dick LeBeau’s defense continues to be phenomenal as well, leading the NFL in both total defense surrendering just 235.4 yards allowed per game and scoring defense with 14.5 points allowed per game. Over the last five games, the defensive performance has been especially solid; great news for NFL bettors who wager on pro football games to go under the ‘total’ with three of those five being of the lower scoring variety.
After Tom Brady’s Week 1 season ending injury and the subsequent struggles of Matt Cassel and the Patriots, the season looked lost for New England. However, Cassel has been nothing short of spectacular in his last two games, completing 60 of 94 passes for 815 yards and six touchdowns to go along with just one interception. Cassel’s recent form has him in line for a big payday at the end of the season with him being in the final year of his contract.
Patriots bettors also got a boost from Randy Moss last week, as the superstar receiver put together his best effort of the season, catching eight passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns. The Patriots have been a good team to pro football bettors lately, covering three of their last four games heading into this Sunday’s game. However, bettors should also be aware that the Patriots haven’t performed well in Foxboro this season going just 2-4 ATS.
Some NFL betting trends to know for the game include that the Steelers are 0-7 ATS for NFL gamblers in their last seven games after beating a team by two touchdowns or more the previous week, the Patriots are 35-17-2 ATS in their last 54 games against a team with a winning record, and that the underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings between these two teams.
Current NFL lines have the Patriots as a small one-point home favorite in this game with a ‘total’ of 39.5 points.
