Sports betting weekend recap
It was another weekend of ups and downs for Jimmy's bankroll thanks to a Sunday clunker
Let's start out on Saturday, where I once again failed to go 3-for-3 in my baseball three-pack. The reason is my new least-favorite player, Masa Kobayashi. To review, on Saturday I picked Cleveland (+100), Oakland (+130), and the White Sox (-115).
The Oakland underdog special paid off after Rich Harden tossed a gem and Tim Hudson got beat around just like I predicted. The White Sox also came through, although it was because of the Giants' lame offense, which I also called.
In the Cleveland/Cincinnati game Aaron Harang was pitching for the Reds and I expected him to get little run support, as he has been all season.
That turned out to be right until the ninth inning. With Cleveland leading 2-1 Kobayashi came in, and after giving up a single to Joey Votto and hitting Edwin Encarnacion he surrendered a game-winning three-run blast to Adam Dunn. And there goes my perfect 3-for-3 day.
That turned out to be an omen of things to come on Sunday. It started with my UNDER play in the Cleveland/Cincinnati finale. With Cliff Lee and Edinson Volquez starting I figured an UNDER was a given.
That was until Lee imploded for the first time this season and gave up six runs, five of which were earned. Lee had only allowed four earned runs combined in his first seven starts. Tack on four runs from Cleveland and the 10 runs scored went OVER the posted total of 7.5.
At the last minute on Sunday I also jumped on Detroit at +105 versus Arizona. I don't know what I was thinking because I said just last week I was going to avoid betting on Arizona games for awhile.
I remembered why I said that after the D-Backs blanked Detroit 4-0. Randy Johnson threw seven shutout innings, instead of getting tagged for five or six like I expected.
My final chance at a winner on Sunday was the Boston Celtics. Heading home for a must-win Game 7 I expected Boston to cruise to an easy win and cover the 7-point spread. Nope! Boston did win, but only by five points in a 97-92 victory. Maybe Sunday should really be my day of sports betting rest from now on.
