Betting on golf is tricky sometimes, but it can also highly profitable because the odds on even the top contenders can pay very well. Tiger Woods is still out this weekend and that's actually a good thing for bettors, because when Tiger wins he doesn't pay jack.

That means if you get lucky and pick the winner at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this weekend, you're in for a nice payday.

When I make my golf picks I usually go with the defending champion, others who have won on a certain course before, who's currently hot, plus a wild card or two that could pay well if they finally live up to their potential and win.

Using those criteria, my PGA six-pack of picks for this weekend would look something like this:

Phil Mickelson +1000
Adam Scott +1100
Anthony Kim +3500
Stephen Ames +6000
Hunter Mahan +7000
Heath Slocum +8500

Mickelson and Scott have both won on the Tour this season, and they've both won before at Sawgrass. Kim crushed the rest of the field in the Wachovia last week, and Ames came out of nowhere to win the Players two years ago. Who's to say he won't do it again?

Mahan is due for a win after working his way up the leaderboard slowly over his last four tournaments. Slocum is a gut pick after looking at par-3 results on the PGA Tour so far this season.

Slocum has posted some of the best stats on par-3 holes around the tour this season, and players at Sawgrass live and die by how they do at the infamous No. 17 "Island Green."

Betting on golf doesn't mean you have to luck out and pick the overall winner. There are tons of fun bets like golf matchups, where you bet that Mickelson will finish ahead of Woods for example. Regardless of whether they win the tournament, all you need to do to win your bet is have Mickelson's score be lower than Tiger's.
