Francis fires for first win for Rockies
Tuesday, May 13 2008

A pair of intriguing pitching matchups highlights Tuesday's MLB action as two hurlers off to great starts clash when Florida faces Cincinnati, and a rare battle of southpaws is on tap for bettors when Colorado takes on Arizona.

The first-place Florida Marlins send Mark Hendrickson to the hill on Tuesday against Cincinnati's young gun Edinson Volquez. Hendrickson is a surprising 5-1 on the season with a solid 3.56 ERA. In his last start Hendrickson only lasted four 1-3 innings after throwing 109 pitches and giving up one run on seven hits.

Volquez improved to 5-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.06 in his last outing against the Cubs, in which he pitched seven shutout innings and allowed only four hits while striking out 10.

The Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks battled for the NL West title last season, but eight full games already separates first-place Arizona from Colorado in the division standings this year.

Colorado needs Jeff Francis to start pitching like an ace again, if they hope to start climbing the ladder again and win some money for their betting fans on the MLB odds.

Francis, 0-3 with a 5.27 ERA, gets the start against Arizona on Tuesday. Francis may finally be coming around after holding St. Louis to three runs on six hits in five innings in his last start. In two starts against Arizona earlier this season, Francis was hammered for 12 runs in only 11 1-3 innings which included giving up six home runs.

Getting the start for Arizona on Tuesday is veteran lefthander Randy Johnson. The Big Unit was supposed to start on Sunday, but was skipped in the rotation due to rain and wind in Chicago. After starting the season on the DL, Johnson is 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA in five starts.
