Stanley Cup final starts Saturday
Tuesday, May 20 2008

The Detroit Red Wings will go for their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 seasons starting on Saturday, but to raise the Cup again, they'll have to get through the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Detroit took a 3-0 lead over Dallas in the Western Conference final, but needed three more games to finally seal the deal in Game 6. The Red Wings jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period on Monday night and never looked back en route to a 4-1 victory.

Henrik Zetterberg netted a shorthanded goal in the win (and Kris Draper scored with his face) and is now tied for the playoff scoring lead with 21 points. Pavel Datsyuk also found the back of the net in the win and heads to the final with 19 points in the postseason.

Leading Pittsburgh into the final, ahead of schedule according to some experts, were their big guns: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa. Crosby is tied with Zetterberg for the playoff scoring lead with 21 points, while Malkin and Hossa both have 19 playoff points.

Saturday's series opener will be the first time Detroit and Pittsburgh meet up since 2006, as they did play against each other during this regular season. Back in 2006 the Red Wings blanked the Penguins 2-0.
