Will Game 2 be an OVER play?
Monday, May 26 2008

Detroit efficiently picked apart the Penguins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals, using patience, skill and good luck to beat them 4-0.

But to hear the Wings talk about it, you can expect a stronger effort and maybe a bigger margin of victory in tonight's Game 2 (where Detroit opened s -170 moneyline favorite at ).

If the margin gets bigger, the total becomes a question for bettors to consider. The total opened at 5.5. Keeping the Penguins off the scoresheet again will be a tough task. But if Detroit can play better, maybe you are looking at an OVER play.

But in looking at the NHL betting matchup details, you find some trends that suggest this might be a square play. Detroit has played four UNDERs in their past six home games. Going back to the 1990s, the UNDER is 7-2 in 9 meetings between these teams here.

And Pittsburgh has played 8 UNDERS in their past 11 road games.

Detroit got here through being the league's best defensive team and the league's third highest-scoring team. Throw in a lethal power play, strong penalty kill and veteran leadership and you may have an overmatched Pittsburgh team, despite its wealth of young talent.
