Longshot odds in Travelers Championship
Wednesday, Jun 18 2008

Golfer Stewart Clink

After playing 91 holes over five days last week, Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate both take a well-deserved week off as the PGA Tour returns to the links for the Travelers Championship at TPC at River Highlands.

Mediate actually was scheduled to play this weekend but withdrew on Tuesday, which isn't surprising after the highs and lows he went through at Torrey Pines during the U.S. Open.

Heading into the opening round of the Travelers on Thursday there are three co-favorites at , as Kenny Perry, Vijay Singh and Stewart Cink are all listed at 15/1 odds to win.

Cink is a former winner of the Travelers Championship, however that was way back in 1997 when it was known as the Greater Hartford Open. Perry, in an attempt to produce only strong results and make the Ryder Cup team, took a pass on the U.S. Open last week but he did win the Memorial Tournament earlier this month.

Singh hasn't looked like the Singh of old very often this year, and that includes last week's U.S. Open in which he finished well back in a tie for 65th place.

Last year at River Highlands, Hunter Mahan and Jay Williamson met up in a playoff after both shot 15-under par. Mahan birdied the first playoff hole and Williamson posted a par to give Mahan the tournament title.

Mahan returns to River Highlands this week as a 20/1 underdog to repeat as champion. Mahan had missed the cut in two straight tournaments before tying for 18th place in the U.S. Open last week.

Aside from Mahan and Cink, there are a few other former Travelers Championship winners scheduled to be among the field this weekend.

They include J.J. Henry, who won in 2006 and is a 60/1 underdog; Brad Faxon, who won in 2005 and is a 200/1 underdog; and Woody Austin, who won back in 2004 and is a 40/1 underdog at .
