Shell Houston Open betting preview
Thursday, Apr 3 2008

Even though it takes place a week before The Masters, this weekend’s Shell Houston Open has still succeeded in drawing a respectable field. And that’s great news for those looking to bet on golf in April.

Phil Mickelson has decided to take on the Tournament Course at Redstone GC in Humble, Texas to prepare for a run at the green jacket next week. Mickelson hasn’t played an event since finishing tied for 20th in the WGC-CA Championship two weeks ago.

Mickelson has one tournament title to his name so far this season, and the oddsmakers at expect him to challenge for the top of the leaderboard this week after listing him as a 9/1 Shell Houston Open favorite.

Following Lefty on the odds list is Adam Scott, who just happens to be the defending champion of this event, at 12/1. Scott took home the trophy last year after shooting 17-under par. That gave him a three-stroke victory over both Stuart Appleby and Bubba Watson, who tied for second at 14-under.

Appleby looks like a tantalizing dark horse pick at at 22/1, considering he challenged for the lead last year and he has won this tournament twice before in 2006 and 1999.

Another dark horse worth a look is Andre Romero. Last week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Romero recorded his first PGA Tour victory after posting a one-stroke victory over Peter Lonard.

If Romero can get on top of the leaderboard again this week he would pay well at where he is a 40/1 underdog. And you don’t have to pick the Shell Houston Open winner to make a profit this week.
