Big Brown leads Kentucky Derby odds
Thursday, May 1 2008

The 134th edition of the Kentucky Derby will be run at Churchill Downs on Saturday and the 20-horse field has now been set. Will the favorite finally come through with a win this year, or can another late runner storm from the pack like juvy winner Street Sense did a year ago?

The horse generating the most buzz among the field of 20 is Big Brown. Big Brown has won all three races he's competed in this season, with his most impressive victory coming in the Florida Derby - a key Derby prep race.

Not only are the experts talking up Big Brown as a potential Derby winner, but so are the oddsmakers at who have tagged him as the race favorite at 3/2.

Following Big Brown on the Kentucky Derby betting lines is Colonel John at 7/2. The Colonel has also been receiving a lot of press from the experts since he won the Santa Anita Derby. Colonel John showed tremendous heart at Santa Anita after he fell well behind early, but came roaring back to win the prestigious prep race at the wire.

However, some experts have trouble grading winners from races at Santa Anita due to the synthetic polytrack used there. With its improved draining capabilities, polytrack conditions tend to run faster than the natural conditions that would be found in the mud and - if wet - the slop at Churchill Downs.

One of the most difficult horses for experts to gauge heading into the Derby is Pyro, although the oddsmakers expect him to be a contender after pegging him at 5/1 on the Kentucky Derby odds.

Pyro powered his way to wins in the Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds and in the Louisiana Derby, also at the Fair Grounds, before stumbling in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. In the Blue Grass, Pyro finished well back in tenth place, confounding horse bettors with that lame performance.

Any Kentucky Derby bettors who place a wager on Pyro will be hoping for the blazer that won earlier in the season to re-emerge at Churchill Downs. Pyro does have experience backing him, as he is trained by Steve Asmussen who also trained last year's winner of the Preakness Stakes, Curlin.

One other contender to keep your eye on, at least according to the oddsmakers at , is Recapturetheglory who also checks in at 5/1 on the Kentucky Derby odds.

Recapturetheglory thrust himself into the line of Derby contenders after winning the Illinois Derby early last month. That win wasn't enough to impress many of the experts who don't have Recapturetheglory on their radar, which could make him a nice dark horse pick heading into the weekend.

Before the Run for the Roses goes off this weekend, there is the annual Kentucky Oaks for fillies only on Friday. The top contender in this 1 1/8 mile race was supposed to be Eight Belles, but trainer Todd Pletcher decided to pull her out of the Oaks and race her in the Derby instead.

This will make her the first filly to run in the Derby since 1999 when Excellent Meeting finished fifth. With Eight Belles out, the new favorite is Proud Spell who was listed at 7/2 before Eight Belles was officially removed from the Oaks field. Expect those odds to change considerably once Eight Belles' absence is factored in.
